Crafts FAQ
Hand block printing is one of India's oldest textile printing traditions, where carved wooden blocks are dipped in natural or mineral dyes and stamped onto fabric by hand, one impression at a time. Each block covers a small area of the fabric, and a repeat pattern is built up by carefully aligning repeated impressions. The slight variations in pressure and alignment between impressions give hand block printed textiles their characteristic warmth and authenticity, something machine printing cannot replicate.
Nilam India uses a combination of natural and AZO-free dyes in hand block printing. Natural dyes derived from plant and mineral sources are used wherever possible, aligning with the brand's sustainable ethos. The dyes are safe, non-toxic, and gentle on both the environment and the wearer's skin.
Hand block print motifs range widely, traditional Indian motifs include florals (jaal patterns), geometric shapes, paisleys (kairi), birds, elephants, and abstract forms. Nilam India's block print collection includes both classic traditional motifs and contemporary pattern interpretations, including the earthy palette of the Shaam Sunset Collection.
Hand block printed fabrics in natural cotton are durable with proper care. Natural dyes may gently soften over multiple washes (which gives aged block print garments a beautiful, lived-in quality), while mineral and AZO-free dyes maintain colour vibrancy longer. Cold washing in mild detergent and shade drying preserves the print best.
Yes. Natural fabric (cotton) and AZO-free dye hand block printed garments are generally well-suited for sensitive skin, they are softer, more breathable, and less likely to cause irritation than synthetic fabric with chemical dyes. Nilam India's commitment to natural fabrics and responsible dyes makes their block print garments a skin-friendly choice.
Yes. Nilam India's Hand Block Print collection at nilamind.com/collections/block-prints is a complete craft collection spanning all garment categories like dresses, tops, skirts, kurtis, co-ords, pants, kimonos, dupattas, and bags, all in hand block printed natural fabric.
Ajrakh is a centuries-old resist-block-printing and natural dyeing tradition originating in the Kutch district of Gujarat and Sindh (now Pakistan). Traditionally made by the Khatri community, Ajrakh involves multiple stages of resist application and dyeing, typically in natural indigo blue and madder red, creating intricate geometric patterns with a distinctive two-sided appearance. Each piece goes through 14 to 16 stages of dyeing, washing, and printing before completion.
Nilam India offers a handcrafted Ajrakh clothing collection including dresses, tops, kurtis, skirts, dupattas, and more. Browse at nilamind.com/collections/ajrakh.
Ajrakh clothing is beautifully versatile, the rich geometric prints and earthy natural dye colours work well for everyday wear, casual outings, workwear, and festive occasions alike. Ajrakh kurtas and tops are popular choices for Indian office wear, while Ajrakh dresses and maxi skirts are popular for festive and cultural events.
Ajrakh is a specific style of block printing with a defined regional origin (Kutch/Sindh), a specific resist-printing and natural dyeing process, characteristic geometric pattern vocabulary, and traditional colour palette (indigo and madder). Regular hand block printing is a broader technique that encompasses many styles, motifs, and colours. Ajrakh is one of the most refined and labour-intensive forms of block printing in India.
Hand wash in cold water using mild detergent, do not soak. The first wash may release some excess natural dye, this is normal and not a defect. Dry in shade. Iron on the reverse side on medium heat. Avoid bleach and hot water, which can alter natural dye colours.
Traditional Ajrakh is one of India's most sustainable textile traditions, it uses natural dyes from plant and mineral sources, involves no synthetic chemicals in the dyeing process, and supports the livelihoods of traditional Khatri artisan families. Nilam India's Ajrakh collection is aligned with the brand's sustainability commitments.
Nilam India's Ajrakh collection at nilamind.com/collections/ajrakh includes dresses, tops, kurtis, skirts, dupattas, co-ords, pants, and bags, a comprehensive range of everyday and festive garments in authentic Ajrakh craft fabric.
Indigo is one of the world's oldest dyes, derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant, and has been integral to Indian textile tradition for thousands of years. Indigo dyeing produces the rich, deep blue tones iconic to Indian block prints, Ajrakh, and shibori textiles. The dye is natural, plant-based, and the indigo dyeing process which involves fermentation vats and multiple dips to build up colour is a craft tradition in itself. India was historically the world's primary source of natural indigo.
Nilam India's Indigo collection features clothing dyed and/or printed using traditional indigo techniques, including indigo block prints, hand-dyed indigo, and shibori indigo. Browse at nilamind.com/collections/indigo.
Indigo dyeing produces a spectrum of blue from pale sky blue to rich midnight navy, depending on the number of dye baths and resist techniques used. Combining indigo with other natural dyes can produce grey-greens, blue-blacks, and aqua tones. Each piece has natural variation, no two indigo-dyed garments are identical.
Yes. Nilam India's Indigo garments are made from natural cotton fabrics, making them breathable and comfortable in all seasons. Deeply dyed indigo pieces in mid-blue and navy tones are particularly popular for the cooler months (October–February), while lighter indigo tones in fine cotton are beautiful for summer.
Nilam India's Indigo collection uses natural or natural-process indigo dyeing consistent with the brand's sustainable ethos. Natural indigo produces the richest, most authentic blue tones and is far gentler on the environment than synthetic indigo.
Nilam India's Indigo collection at nilamind.com/collections/indigo includes dresses, tops (including the popular Mia Indigo Crop Top), kurtis, skirts, pants, dupattas, and bags — all featuring indigo dyeing in various styles.
Ikkat (also spelled Ikat) is a resist-dyeing technique applied to yarns before weaving. The pattern is created by binding and dyeing sections of the warp (and sometimes weft) threads before they are woven on the loom, so the pattern emerges in the woven fabric. It requires great skill to align the pre-dyed yarns precisely to create the characteristic slightly blurred, feathered-edge geometric patterns that define Ikkat. India has several famous Ikkat traditions Sambalpuri (Odisha), Pochampally (Telangana), and Patan Patola (Gujarat).
Nilam India offers a clothing collection in Ikkat woven fabrics, dresses, tops, kurtis, and more. Browse at nilamind.com/collections/ikkat.
Unlike printed fabrics (where the design is applied on top of an already-woven cloth), Ikkat patterns are woven into the fabric itself the pattern is created by the coloured yarns as they interlace during weaving. This means the design is visible on both sides of the fabric and cannot peel, crack, or fade the way surface prints can. Ikkat fabrics have a distinctive textured quality and the characteristic slightly hazy edges of the pattern.
Nilam India's Ikkat collection includes dresses, tops, kurtis, skirts, dupattas, and other garments in Ikkat woven fabric. Browse at nilamind.com/collections/ikkat.
Ikkat woven garments in natural cotton can be gently hand washed in cold water or machine washed on a gentle cycle. Avoid harsh detergents and bleach. Dry in shade and iron on a medium setting. Unlike printed fabrics, Ikkat patterns will not be affected by ironing since the design is woven in.
Hand screen printing involves pushing ink or dye through a mesh screen (stencil) onto fabric by hand using a squeegee. Each colour in the design requires a separate screen and pass. Hand screen printing produces vivid, clean-edged prints with depth that digital printing cannot replicate. It is also more sustainable than digital printing when using natural or AZO-free inks. Nilam India's hand screen printed collection is at nilamind.com/collections/hand-screen-print.
Hand dyed clothing is dyed by artisans using manual techniques, as opposed to industrial machine dyeing. Techniques include shibori (Japanese resist-dyeing using folding, binding, or stitching), tie-dye, dip-dyeing, and solid natural dye baths. Each hand-dyed piece is unique due to the natural variation in the dyeing process. Nilam India's hand dyed collection is at nilamind.com/collections/hand-dyed.
Yes. Nilam India's hand dyed garments use natural or low-impact dyes applied in small artisan batches, far more sustainable than industrial dyeing which uses large quantities of water and synthetic chemicals. Each hand-dyed piece supports artisan livelihoods and reduces chemical waste compared to mass manufacturing.
Nilam India's hand screen printed garments feature vivid, graphic prints with clean lines and bold colour combinations. Unlike block prints (which have a slightly rustic, stamped quality), screen prints have sharper edges and more detail. The Fresh Summer Prints collection features hand screen prints in contemporary, vibrant summer motifs.
The Fresh Summer Prints collection (also listed as Aesthetic Hour) at nilamind.com/collections/aesthetic-hour features new arrival clothing in fresh, summer-appropriate handcrafted prints, light colours, botanical motifs, and contemporary patterns suited for warm weather dressing.
